Written By TLC Chiropractic on June 30, 2020

rsz workplacepostureWork-related musculoskeletal disorders are more common in the workplace than you may think. According to the United States Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), work-related musculoskeletal disorders, such as injuries due to poor workplace ergonomics, account for the most frequently reported causes of lost or restricted work time.

Workplace ergonomics refers to your workplace setup. Oftentimes, when discussing workplace ergonomics, people think of desk jobs and sitting for long hours, which, in turn, can harm your work posture. While sitting for too much can negatively impact your posture, so can other jobs that involve lifting, bending, and stretching throughout the day.

Workplace Ergonomics Play a Massive Role in Your Health and Wellbeing

Workplace injuries aren’t always as obvious as a fall, scrape, or break of a bone. Workplace ergonomics plays a significant role in your overall health and wellbeing, and it’s essential to pay attention to what you’re doing and how you are doing it throughout the day to help with improving posture.

For those who have relatively active jobs, you want to pay attention to:

  • Your posture while standing/stretching
  • How you are carrying everyday items throughout your day (bags, tablets, notebooks, etc.)
  • How you are picking up/lifting items

For those who spend most of their day sitting (driving or sitting at a desk), you’ll want to:

  • Make sure you have adequate lighting setup to reduce glare and the need to squint
  • Have an ergonomic setup that includes an adjustable chair, a monitor that Is at least an arm’s length away, and other frequently used items that are within easy reach
  • Get up frequently to stretch your legs and give your eyes/neck a break

These are only a handful of helpful tips to help improve your workplace ergonomics. You can and should discuss more ideas with your medical and workplace team.
